A Night at the Museum:
The Snowy Day and the Art of Ezra Jack Keats

Thursday, November 3
6:30pm - 8:00pm
The Jewish Museum

WiCM is getting a special peak at the first major exhibition in this country to pay tribute to award-winning author and illustrator Ezra Jack Keats (1916–1983), whose beloved children’s books include Whistle for Willie, Peter’s Chair, and The Snowy Day—the first modern full-color picture book to feature an African-American protagonist. Published in 1962, at the height of the civil rights movement in America, the book went on to become an inspiration for generations of readers, transforming children’s literature forever.

Join us on a private docent-led walk through the exhibit of this celebrated artist.

About Ezra Jack Keats
The author and illustrator was born Jacob Ezra Katz in Brooklyn in 1916. His parents were Eastern European Jewish immigrants and very poor. Primarily self-taught, he drew upon memories of growing up in East New York, one of the most deprived neighborhoods in the city. Yet his work transcends the personal and reflects the universal concerns of children.

Keats’s experience of antisemitism and poverty in his youth gave him a lifelong sympathy for others who suffered prejudice and want. “If,” he once remarked, “we all could really see (‘see’ as perceive, understand, discover) each other exactly as the other is, this would be a different world.” A visit to Keats’s neighborhood is restorative: Peter and his friends remind us of the simple joy of being alive.

Ezra Jack Keat's Illustrations
Inspired by Asian art and haiku poetry, Keats used lush color in his paintings and collages and strove for simplicity in his texts. He was often more intent on capturing a mood than developing a plot. “Each drawing is considered not in itself, but in relationship to the rest of the book,” he explained, while keeping in mind “drama, continuity, contrast, and mood.” His preferred format was the horizontal double-page spread, which freed him to alternate close-up scenes with panoramic views. In his illustrations Keats makes dilapidated urban settings beautiful through his mastery of collage as well as his dramatic use of color. By the end of his life in 1983, he had illustrated over eighty books, most of them for children, twenty-two of which he also authored.

About the Exhibition
The exhibition features over 80 original works by the artist, from preliminary sketches and dummies or preparatory books, to final paintings and collages, including examples of Keats’s most introspective but less-known output inspired by Asian art and poetry. One of the spaces in the galleries will be transformed into a reading room for visitors of all ages inspired by Keats's art and stories

WiCM Hears a Who!
Audio Books in the Age of Transmedia

Tuesday, November 8
6:30-8:30pm
Random House

Please join us for a panel on Audio Books as we celebrate the release of Dr. Seuss's The Bippolo Seed.

Join WiCM and Dan Zitt, Director of Audio Production at Random House, for a panel on Audio Books in celebration of the release of THE BIPPOLO SEED AND OTHER LOST STORIES, written and illustrated by DR. SEUSS.

WiCM's very own Karen Halpenny will moderate this unique panel as Dan and his team walk us through how books are interpreted in an audio form and how the audio book is growing and changing as a transmedia tool in the digital age. They'll also provide a behind the scenes look of the making of the star-studded BIPPOLO SEED audio book.

Attendees will receive a free copy of THE BIPPOLO SEED audio book, featuring Neil Patrick Harris, Anjelica Huston, Jason Lee, Joan Cusack, Edward Herrmann, William H. Macy and Peter Dinklage!

About THE BIPPOLO SEED:
It's the literary equivalant of buried treasure! Seuss scholar/collector Charles D. Cohen has hunted down seven rarely seen stories by Dr. Seuss. Originally published in magazines between 1950 and 1951, they include "The Bear, the Rabbit, and the Zinniga-Zanniga " (about a rabbit who is saved from a bear with a single eyelash!); "Gustav the Goldfish" (an early, rhymed version of the Beginner Book A Fish Out of Water); "Tadd and Todd" (a tale passed down via photocopy to generations of twins); "Steak for Supper" (about fantastic creatures who follow a boy home in anticipation of a steak dinner); "The Bippolo Seed" (in which a scheming feline leads an innocent duck to make a bad decision); "The Strange Shirt Spot" (the inspiration for the bathtub-ring scene in The Cat in the Hat Comes Back); and "The Great Henry McBride" (about a boy whose far-flung career fantasies are only bested by those of the real Dr. Seuss himself).

Think you can Grow Up in One Evening? Back by popular demand, WiCM hosted another "sensory workshop" to get in touch with our inner kid! We played with Child Development experts Jamie Betesh and Alisha Alleyne from Insight Research Group as they walked us through what's going on inside kids at age 4 vs. age 7 vs. age 11.  We experienced what children are going through physically, cognitively, and emotionally and considered what it feels like to be a certain age, how children spend their time, and what makes them happy. We also talked about what media activities are most impactful at certain ages, and, most importantly, how kids are the same -and not the same - as when you we were that age!

Media & Obesity: The Latest Research from Dr. Amy Jordan
October 21, 7pm - Bryant Park Screening Room

Obesity continues to be a major problem for children in America, with a staggering number overweight before they enter school. The media holds a unique and conflicting position as both the most powerful marketing tool for selling food to children as well as an influential voice for encouraging a healthier lifestyle. Dr. Amy Jordan of the Annenberg Public Policy Center, a leading expert in the field, joined WiCM for a night of discussion and ideas as she presented her research on the subject. Dr. Amy Jordan is director of the Media and the Developing Child sector of the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania, where she oversees research on children's media policy. Her studies have examined the implementation and public reception of the educational television mandate known as the Three-Hour Rule, the V-Chip legislation, the American Academy of Pediatrics' media use recommendations and the industry's efforts to self-regulate food marketing to children. Dr. Jordan is the recipient of the International Communication Association's Best Applied/Policy Research Award and the National Communication Association's Stanley L. Saxon Applied Research Award.

TALKING TECH: Kids & Media Multi-tasking
March 24, 2010 at Sesame Workshop

Dr. Michael Levine and Dr. Lori Takeuchi of The Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop joined WiCM members in a discussion about "media multitasking" and its impact on the way children think, learn, socialize, and understand the world. New Technology sometimes brings change that is so swift and so sweeping, that the impact and implications are hard to grasp. For today's children, communication technology has become more affordable, accessible, and available than ever before. Approximately one-third of children absorb some other medium while watching TV, listening to music, using the computer, or reading. (Roberts, Foehr, & Rideout, 2005) This was the first workshop in a new series designed to educate WiCM members and guests about current and emerging technologies, and to empower them to connect each platform with its creative and educational potential.
